Here's a Middle-Earth question: What's the status of the copyright for Middle-Earth? Can anyone write in that world, or do you need the permission of the Tolkien family? Are there any fanfic sites for Middle-Earth? -

Wed, January 10, 2007 - 10:14 AMYes they do. The Tolkien estate retains all the rights other than film which belong to the Saul Zaentz Company. When my company (Sierra On-Line) was working on the original MMO back in 98, we had to get the deal with the Tolkien Estate, but had to work around a carve-out that Zaentz held for gaming rights to games based on films (e.g. Jackson's Films). BTW the Tolkiens are extremely conservative about how they manage those rights. -
